Well designed “web 2.0” websites – Aesthetics meets substance

Social media tools and social networks are popping up 10-a-minute and digital property owners are now competing by providing good design as well as good functionality.

Different types of platforms will in time attract different types of users according to their look and feel, just like Macs attract one of type computer user and Windows (yawn) attracts another.

I have three personal favourites at the moment: Tumblr, Vimeo and Pownce. I think they have great design and typography, aside from all that they’re just damn cool and really on the mark with how these types of websites should look and feel.

A couple of websites that could do with taking a few pointers are Squidoo (sorry Seth) and hi5…they look quite clutterd, blocky and wysigigish.

I don’t think it’s a case of it not working for anyone Seth, Squidoo is a great concept with really good functionality.

I think some of the other “web 2.0″ type websites have done really well with their look and feel and they’re evidently trying to compete with a similar websites by upping their game on aesthetics.

I am sure there are a mass of people out there who dislike the aesthetics of the sites that I like. I think it’s great that we’re at a point where people have so much choice and there really are social media/networking platforms with a design, look and feel to suit every taste.

I think it’s really cool that you guys are so proactive about listening to opinions and feedback on Squidoo and respond to it with such immediacy.

Thanks. The thing is, it DOES work for people, for more than a quarter of a million people. These folks have a different aesthetic sense than some web insiders.

The web is about testing and segmentation. A huge number of web2 sites are so busy trying to impress a few pundits that they forget to build a business and serve their audience.

    PS I think you’ll like http://www.ever.com. That’s us too.
