Yes…I saw the film about the font.

Up until now I’ve been oblivious to the ubiquity of Helvetica. Having only noticed it in its pure and bold appearances, the film does a great job of passively displaying the use of Helvetica in our everyday surroundings. Bold, regular and Italic it often goes unnoticed because I think we’re becoming immune to it and its seamless way of blending into branding and communications.

I’ve recently been trying to find my own visual communication style, a style for my brand, brand Dhiren: A typeface and layout style that can become consistently recognised as my own.

Perhaps I’ll go for a serif, but will that exclude certain groups of people? The next presentation I do will be replicated be with a different typeface and layout style. The people will decide — whether it matters to me or not may well be a different story.

Will keep you posted.

I’m really liking the Malin+Goetz product packaging. It’s been around for quite some time, however, I like the way the type descends, gets smaller (in size and weight) and fades in colour.

I’ve been a bit cheeky and copied this style for a few powerpoint presentations. It’s quite a cool way of showing how drawn out some tech/marketing definitions look. I briefly show the slide with the definition and then flip over to the next slide, which contains a single easy to digest sentence interpreting the word/technology/theory I’m trying to explain.

The M+G website is also quite minimalist in it’s appearance and this ties in nicely with their packaging design.

An overall excellent use of the iconic Helvetica font in both package and web design.

Social media tools and social networks are popping up 10-a-minute and digital property owners are now competing by providing good design as well as good functionality.

Different types of platforms will in time attract different types of users according to their look and feel, just like Macs attract one of type computer user and Windows (yawn) attracts another.

I have three personal favourites at the moment: Tumblr, Vimeo and Pownce. I think they have great design and typography, aside from all that they’re just damn cool and really on the mark with how these types of websites should look and feel.

A couple of websites that could do with taking a few pointers are Squidoo (sorry Seth) and hi5…they look quite clutterd, blocky and wysigigish.
